Land Acknowledgment: In 2021, I assigned David William's book "Too High and Too Steep" as reading for my undergraduate Geotechnical Engineering course. Reflecting on the stories told in this history and on my personal and fieldwork experiences working across the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, I have come to better understand how the arrival of settlers profoundly impacted the land that Indigenous nations preserved and maintained since time immemorial. I thus acknowledge, recognize, and express gratitude to the Coast Salish people—stewards of the environment—on whose homeland I now live and work.
